How to Decorate a Halloween Tree, Step by Step

A Halloween tree is easy to get wrong and easy to get right — the difference is order and layering. Follow these five steps and any tree, from bare-branch to repurposed Christmas tree, comes out looking styled.

What you'll need

Step 1 — Fluff and light the tree first

Shape the branches, then wrap lights from the trunk outward before anything else goes on. Lighting an already-decorated tree is the most common mistake. Purple and orange read the most "Halloween"; warm-white keeps a gothic tree elegant.

Step 2 — Place your anchor ornaments

Put your largest, best pieces on first, spaced evenly around the tree and staggered in height. These set the color story and stop any one area from feeling heavy.

Step 3 — Fill in with mid and mini ornaments

Work in the smaller pieces to balance color and fill gaps. Push some ornaments deeper into the branches and let others sit near the tips — that depth is what makes a tree look three-dimensional instead of flat. See our ornament guide for the icons worth collecting.

Step 4 — Add filler and texture

Tuck in gauze, cobweb, black feathers, berry picks or deco mesh to add movement and hide bare spots. This is also the cheapest way to make a sparse tree look full.

Step 5 — Top it off and hide the base

Finish with a topper — an oversized skull, a raven, a spider, a witch hat or a dramatic bow — and conceal the stand with black fabric, a cauldron or a collar. Step back, spin the tree, and fill any obvious gaps.

Pro move: Mix matte and glossy finishes and at least two ornament sizes. Uniform ornaments look store-bought; variety looks designed.

Fill your tree with pieces worth keeping

Horrornaments' hand-painted ornaments and toppers are made to hang together and last — build a tree you'll re-decorate for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ornaments do I need for a Halloween tree?

Plan for roughly 10 to 15 ornaments per foot of tree height for a full look. A 6-foot tree looks well-filled with about 60 to 90 ornaments plus filler; use fewer for an airy, minimal style.

What order do you decorate a Halloween tree in?

Lights first, then large anchor ornaments, then smaller fill-in ornaments, then filler and texture like gauze or mesh, and finally the topper and base cover.

What lights are best for a Halloween tree?

Orange and purple LED string lights give the most Halloween feel, while warm-white suits an elegant gothic look. Flickering or 'flame' bulbs add eerie atmosphere.
